What is a Sports Medicine Doctor?
A sports medicine doctor is a doctor with specialty fellowship training in sports medicine. This doctor has completed residencies in other medical specialties (such as family practice, pediatrics, emergency medicine, internal medicine, or physical medicine and rehabilitation) followed by a fellowship (an additional one to two years of training) in sports medicine.
Dr. Chukwuocha is board certified in Family Practice and fellowship trained Sports Medicine.
What does a Sports Medicine Doctor do?
A sports medicine doctor treats health problems in active people and athletes. This includes musculoskeletal conditions (non-operative orthopedics such as back pain, knee pain, fracture care and arthritis) and sports related medical conditions in the general population and athletes (such as exercise induced asthma, heart problems, skin conditions, concussions, etc). Sports medicine doctors treat people involved in sports at all ages, from elite athletes to weekend warriors and little leaguers. In addition, sports medicine doctors are committed to educating patients and communities on fitness and wellness, with particular focus on prevention of disease and injury.
What type of patients and medical conditions do you see?
We see patients from age two through all stages of life. We manage a variety of medical conditions from chronic illnesses (such as asthma, high cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid disease or coronary artery disease) to acute problems (such as respiratory infections, fibromyalgia and musculoskeletal injuries).
Do you see non-sports related injuries and illnesses?
Yes we do. A great portion of patients we see everyday are here for non-sports related conditions such diabetes, respiratory infections, skin conditions, etc.
Do you accept referrals from other doctors or other medical professionals?
Yes. We gladly see patients who are referred by other doctors. We generally see sports medicine referrals from pediatricians, emergency room doctors, internists as well as physical therapists.
No. Dr. Chukwuocha does not perform surgery. However, he does perform certain procedures such as skin biopsies, cyst removal, laceration repair, drainage of abscess, etc. If he is treating you and you require surgery, he will refer you to a surgical colleague best suited to handle your condition.
Yes! We treat patients from age two through all stages of life.
Do you have in-office laboratory services?
Yes we do. We provide on-site rapid lab tests (such as blood glucose screening, urinalysis, pregnancy tests, strep tests, flu test and much more.) When more detailed testing is needed, specimen is collected and sent to off‑site laboratories such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics.
What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most major insurances. Please refer to the “Office Information” section.
Both MDs and DOs are doctors, licensed by state medical boards to practice medicine. A DO attends an osteopathic school of medicine, while an MD attends an allopathic school of medicine. Both of these medical schools have four-year curriculums. The training is very similar, embracing traditional medical diagnosis, examination, and management approaches. However, there are some practice differences in training. One main difference is that DOs receive specific musculoskeletal training and learn Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). Additionally, instead of just treating specific symptoms or illnesses, DOs also assess the overall health of their patients when treating.
